Frequently Asked Questions
Over my next few blogs I will try to address questions that come up in conversation with patients on a daily basis -
Dr. Malki, What are my options for bleaching or whitening my teeth?

This is a very common and frequently asked question. I usually tell patients that I recommend 3 options. Those 3 options range from least to most expensive and from least effective to most effective.

The most cost effective method for a slight improvement is to use Crest White Stripes. They can be purchased over the counter from any pharmacy or Supermarket. They are simple to use if you follow the instructions, very safe and you will see some minor improvements in the color of your teeth.

The next option is to have customized bleaching trays made of your upper and lower jaws. Once the trays or mouth pieces are made you then place bleaching gel in the trays and wear them for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes you take them off and brush your teeth. This usually has to be done for a couple weeks to see the most improvement. The disadvantages of this method include sensitivity of the teeth (which always goes away) and the length of time that it takes to get your desired result. As far as the sensitivity is concerned, like I said, it always goes away after a day or two but you may have to take Advil or a similar medication to help alleviate the sensitivity,

The Third option is to have an in office procedure done. The major advantages of this method include much less sensitivity because of the controlled nature of the procedure and that it is completed within an hour. The main disadvantage is cost, it runs about $850. However, we include the customized bleaching tray within this fee so that the patient can do touch ups of their teeth whenever they want.

These are the 3 options that I usually discuss with my patients when they ask about whitening their teeth. Research shows that bleaching your teeth is very safe and causes no long term harmful effects to the enamel or nerves of the teeth when done properly.
